#18: Something I've Never Done / Basketball
If you're going to do something, do it right. Didn't Yoda say that? Or Obi-Wan? Or some wise movie person?
Well, I did something: finally attended my very first professional basketball game! And if sipping champagne in box seats watching the Knicks play at Madison Square Garden is "doing it right" then Yoda would be proud!
Truth be told, I've never even watched a basketball game on TV. Never been into sports. Never wore baseball hats. Never passionately followed stats or players or trades or...whatever else fans do. So when I got an email from Delta Airlines inviting me to attend the Knicks' pre-season opener, I wasn't immediately excited. But this year, this "40 by 40 Project" is all about DOING things. New things. Saying YES to things. So I went...and thank god I did!!
My friend Siobhan and I showed up at the super-fancy (and heavily guarded) VIP entrance at 4 Penn Plaza and walked a red carpet to the elevator leading to the box seats. Fancy.
Inside our box, we had our own personal bartender, food station, and lounge area. Yes, this works for me! We even had our own private bathroom which, if you've ever been to Madison Square Garden, is the height of luxury. Flush in peace.
Anyway, we loaded up on drinks and nibbles then headed up the steps leading from our private suite to the stadium.
And then...the game!!! Sneakers squeaking on the court, shouts and cheers and jeers and enraptured fans. A celebrity cam captured one of the kids from Stranger Things. I learned what a two-pointer and a three-pointer shot was. The Knicks played the Nets and, well, lost. But I truly, honestly, shockingly enjoyed the game!
Oh wait, there was LOBSTER! Who knew you could attend a Knicks game while sipping wine and eating kale salad with lobster? Sorry, but this completely ruins me forever. I know "normal" means nosebleed section with watery beer and hotdogs. But for me, basketball games taste of lobster ...and luck.
So thank you, Delta Airlines for introducing me to basketball.
Lobster + basketball.
Basketball done right!
