#16: Afternoon at Coney Island
Kids, this is what being a grown-up is all about: eating as many fried Oreos as you want then riding roller coasters all day! Fun, right? Now let me tell you what being a New Yorker is all about: doing that at Coney Island!
I set out today to explore the cheesy little boardwalk that has captivated tourists for over 100 years. First order of business: Nathan's Famous, the iconic hot dogs stand. Being a vegetarian, I couldn't really "do it right" so instead of a frank I got crinkle fries. With cheese, thank you very much. Nom nom!
Fueled by potatoes and grease, I wandered around a bit until I spotted a familiar face: Zoltar! If you don't know who Zoltar is, then stop reading right now and download the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks. If you DO know who Zoltar is, then you'll know how jazzed I was to get my very own fortune.
What was my fortune? "I see happiness around the bend..." and lo and behold, Zoltar was right! When I rounded the corner, I found myself standing in front of an adorable Water Gun game that was totally deserted. I was the FIRST ONE THERE and the guy said I was guaranteed to win! Who can resist a sure thing? Not this girl! I paid my two-bucks, water gunned my little heart out, and won a stuffed puppy.
Coney Island, you're winning me over already! I was on top of the world...which meant, it was time to REALLY be on top of the world and ride the famous Wonder Wheel! I'm not entirely sure why my 40 by 40 Project experiences seem to always involve heights - it scares me EVERY time! - but I faced that fear yet again and climbed aboard the ferris wheel.
It was windy. The cage swung a bit. The thing was WAY higher than I'd anticipated. But that damn stunning view was worth every second of heart-pounding anxiety. Yay me!! To reward my bravery, I wandered around aimlessly until I found ice cream. Typical. And in my aimless wandering I realized that I'd hit the Coney Island jackpot: the sky was blue, the air was cool, the crowds were thin, and the lines were short. How's that for a perfect day at the park?
